2023 Tax Season is Coming: What You Need to Know About Your Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement

Form 1098 is essential for filing taxes. Learn more about this type of tax form and its impact on you as a homeowner.

Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement – commonly referred to as Form 1098 – is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form that is used by taxpayers to report the amount of interest and related expenses (prepaid interest) paid on a mortgage during the tax year from January 1 – December 31 when the amount totals $600 or more.

Borrowers can request a loan history to collect a total amount of interest or principal paid through the life of the mortgage.

Let’s jump into the five W’s of a Form 1098 Mortgage Interest Statement:

What is a Form 1098?

A Form 1098 is an annual tax form that reports the interest paid on your mortgage over the previous tax year. This form is used when filing personal taxes. For any filing questions, please contact your personal tax advisor. As a homeowner, this tax form determines the total amount of interest paid for the year when figuring out the mortgage interest deduction for filing. The IRS leverages the information to ensure correct financial reporting for lenders that receive interest payments, such as Union Home Mortgage (UHM).

When can I get my Form 1098?

Your Form 1098 will be sent via mail no later than January 31, 2023. Additionally, a copy will be accessible online through the MyUHM Portal by January 13th, 2023.

Where will my Form 1098 get sent?

Your Form 1098 will be available on your portal account at https://www.uhm.com/my-account/ and a copy will be sent to your mailing address on file. To update your mailing address, please email your request to [email protected] or call 1-800-441-3456.

Why does it say "Substitute" on my Form 1098?

Union Home Mortgage includes a year-end statement below your Form 1098 that shows a breakdown of your loan. This is not required by the IRS, but is simply a courtesy to you! Everything you will need to file is in the boxes that correlates to the IRS filing. Check in with your tax specialist with any questions on how to file.

What should I do if I believe there is an error on my Form 1098?

For any errors, please contact Union Home Mortgage Servicing at 1-800-441-3456.

Union Home Mortgage cannot provide tax advice. Please contact your tax/financial advisor for any tax related questions.
